Based on our recent spy photos of 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty test trucks, we asked Mark Stehrenberger to whip up a speculative rendering of what Ford's new heavy-duty pickups could look like. Stehrenberger created the excellent illustration shown above.

The 2011 Super Duty is expected to receive a major styling refresh, about to the extent of the 2008-model-year update. The current blue oval heavy duties took their exterior inspiration from the mighty Ford F-350 Tonka concept that debuted at the 2002 Detroit auto show. The practice round for the 2011 model appears to be the bold Ford F-250 Super Chief concept, first shown at the 2006 Detroit auto show. We also expect the new Super Duty pickups to receive updated badges stamped in the same font as the 2009 Ford F-150. They'll be placed near the bottom of the A-pillar.

Mechanically, we expect the 2011 Super Duty will use Ford's all-new in-house 6.7-liter Scorpion V-8 diesel. The gas engine is expected to be the new 6.2-liter premium V-8, which should replace the 6.8-liter V-10. Another major powertrain change is the likely end of manual transmissions.

At the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Ford unveiled the Explorer America concept. It was a car-based crossover concept that, in theory, would improve efficiency versus the once popular body-on-frame Explorer SUV. According to union officials at Ford's Chicago plant, the next Explorer will be produced at the Torrence Avenue assembly plant in 2011. Union officials claim that Ford promised the Explorer to Chicago as part of the recently reworked UAW contract.

The next Explorer will reportedly be built on the outgoing Taurus X platform, which also underpins the Ford Flex, Taurus and the Lincoln MKS and MKT. The Flex, MKS and MKT are all built at Ford's Oakville, Ontario plant, while the pending cancellation of the Taurus X and Mercury Sable left the recently overhauled Chicago plant twisting in the wind. Ford has not officially confirmed that it will build the Explorer at Chicago, but the Blue Oval did say that a new product would be assembled at the plant.

Ford is expected to unveil the new Explorer crossover with efficient new Ecoboost engines that utilize turbochargers and direct injection to offer large powertrain power with the fuel economy of a smaller engine. The Explorer America concept featured a turbocharged 2.0L Ecoboost four-cylinder engine producing 275 hp and 280 lb-ft or a 340-hp Ecoboost 3.5-liter V6 with fuel savings of up to 30% versus the current Explorer.

The Box Side Step and Tailgate Step put you in the bed with ease.

“The 2009 F-150 is more than a truck—it’s a work system,” said Kelley Blue Book in naming the Ford F-150 its “2009 Best Redesigned Vehicle.” The editors at KBB.com feel that the F-150 exemplifies Ford’s willingness to listen and deliver features, capabilities and efficiencies pickup truck owners want. Making it easier to get into the pickup bed saves time and energy when getting a big job done.

The 2009 Ford F-150, all new both inside and out, is the new benchmark in the full-size pickup segment. Improvements include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that allows this tough truck to deliver even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.

The F-150 is also a showcase for productivity enhancing technologies, from Ford’s industry-exclusive SYNC hands-free, cabin-communications network to Ford Work Solutions, an innovative set of tech tools based on an in-dash computer with Internet access and optional in-dash printer. The computer offers specialized software such as Tool Link to track tools, Crew Chief technology to dispatch workers and reduce vehicle operating costs and Cable Lock to improve security. Then you have the little things that add up to big-time convenience, such as the Box Side Step and Tailgate Step that help owners get in and out of the truck’s pickup box. Consider for a moment how much energy you’ve expended in the past climbing in and out, out and in, in and out. That’s wear and tear on the body that you can do without!

The engineering genius and creative ingenuity found in the new F-150 is catching the eye of truck experts and quickly piling up awards and honors from many of the auto industry’s top organizations and publications – including the Motor Trend 2009 Truck of the Year. To earn the Motor Trend award, F-150 bested its competitors in a series of rigorous tests evaluating the vehicle’s engineering, technology, design, safety, dynamics, performance, build quality and value.

Awards and accolades for the all-new 2009 Ford F-150 include:

-Finalist 2009 North American Truck of the Year (with 2009 Ford Flex for Car of the Year)

In the past five years, “core truckers” – those who use their trucks’ towing and hauling capability for work and leisure – have grown to 40 percent from 30 percent of the light-duty full-size pickup market. And Ford dominates this expanding sub segment. These owners appreciate the F-150’s class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and payload capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match.

Even before fuel economy jumped from 10th to third place among pickup buyers’ top purchase considerations, the design team knew it needed to deliver a substantial improvement over the outgoing model, without sacrificing any capability. Numerous engineering enhancements have combined to improve the F-150’s fuel economy by an average of eight percent across the entire lineup. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year for F-150 models equipped with the high-volume, three-valve, 5.4-liter V8 engine. Plus, the F-150’s SFE (Superior Fuel Economy) Package – which is available on highest-volume XL and XLT series – delivers unsurpassed fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

The redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 gains power, passenger room and numerous new features. Three cab styles are again offered: regular cab, which deletes its former rear access doors; SuperCab extended cab, with rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts; and SuperCrew crew cab, which has four conventional doors and gains six inches in length, mostly benefiting rear-seat legroom. Cargo beds include 5.5-, 6.5- and eight-foot Styleside beds and a 6.5-foot Flareside bed. Seven trim levels are offered: base XL, sporty STX, off-road-oriented FX4, mid-level XLT, uplevel King Ranch and Lariat and new, line-topping Platinum. F-150 safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags and curtain side airbags.

A 248-hp 4.6-liter V8 replaces a 202-hp V6 as the base engine and comes with a four-speed automatic transmission. A 292 hp version of the 4.6 and a 320-hp 5.4-liter V8 are also available, both matched to six-speed automatics. The 5.4-liter V8 is capable of running on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive systems are available.

The 2009 Ford F-150 is an impressive machine, one you must explore thoroughly to fully appreciate its appeal

Ford Saddles Up a Completely New 2010 Mustang

Ford Saddles Up a Completely New 2010 Mustang
New retro-aero styling and an interior makeover help the Mustang cowboy up.

The 2010 Ford Mustang introduces a new herd of ponies – fresh legs in a stampede of interest in muscle cars. The all-important styling cues are in place for traditionalists who love the original. The Mustang look is wrapped around advanced engineering and technology so the contemporary owner won’t feel antiquated.

A new generation Mustang must please many interests. The all-new 2010 edition meets and exceeds the expectations of Mustang enthusiasts and muscle car fans alike. At a glance, you know the brand. This time around, the look is even more evocative than ever, yet the design is aerodynamic and contemporary. From its new “power dome hood” and hockey stick flanks to its downright voluptuous hips and essential three-bar taillamps, the 2010 Mustang is beautiful and “bad” at the same time.

In true Mustang tradition, there is a "steed for every need." You can choose a V6 or V8, in a coupe, convertible or “hardtop” with an innovative glass roof, plus several new options and features delivering the opportunity for customers to personalize their cleaner, meaner-looking Mustangs.

Ford says the restyling was driven as much by aerodynamic principles as it was aesthetics. Channeling airflow has achieved drag reductions of seven percent on the V8-powered GT model and four percent on the base V6. Better management of the airflow around the front of the car also reduces lift by 23 percent.

Inside, the designers seem to have achieved equal success. Simply put, the cockpit looks appealing and “right” with a “feel” derived from high quality materials, soft-touch plastics and attention to detail and comfort. The handsome new one-piece instrument panel design is crafted in seamless soft-touch Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) skin. Genuine aluminum-finish panels further the upscale look. Mustang “signature” chromed-ringed gauges and dual-vane air register vents look “correct” and in the right positions.

Nothing seems out-of-place or added-on. In fact, the integration is remarkable. For example, the entire surface of the center stack and console now mirrors the armrests on the door panels with everything at the same height with matching contours. The console rises to a new height to allow your elbows to rest at the same height, left and right. The seats are designed for comfort and action, striking a happy medium. We think they got it right!

The new center-stack design adds the latest version of Ford SYNC™ with new features such as 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report. Owners can customize their ambient and instrument lighting through the available My Color™ system, which features 125 color options.

As for the mechanicals, the Mustang development team decided the current Mustang Bullitt edition had the right stuff in terms of balanced handling and power, so they used it as a baseline for the new Mustang GT. The 2010 GT retains its 4.6-liter three-valve V8, which has now been bumped up to 315 hp and 325 lb/ft of torque. The frame and body have also been stiffened and new sound insulation has been added for a quieter driving experience. GT models with the new 19-inch wheel-and-tire package also get an aluminum strut tower brace to stiffen the car's structure further. Still, sound is an important part of the Mustang experience so, reportedly, there’s a small tube running from a duct in the engine bay to the cabin to convey the aural candy of that big V8.

The V8 is happy with Regular grade gasoline, but if you put in Premium, it has adaptive calibration that will give you even better mid-range torque, a nice bit of engineering for economy and performance. When you gas-up your Mustang, you’ll appreciate Ford’s Easy Fuel™ capless fuel system, which is standard on all models.

While the suspension system is largely unchanged, Ford retuned the springs and added new dampers that should improve wheel control and ride. New wheel-and-tire packages are now available across the board with a one-inch increase in standard diameter. The V6 Mustangs now have 17-inch wheels standard with optional 18-inchers while the GT has 18-inch or 19-inch packages.

Electronic stability control (ESC) is new and standard on all models. The ESC always defaults to on when you start the car. On V6 Mustangs, the driver will have the option to turn the system off. On the GT, the system can be turned off or switched to a performance mode that allows more slip before intervening.

One important thing that hasn't changed much is weight. The 2010 V6 Mustang only picks up 15 pounds compared to the 2009 model while the GT climbs just 35 pounds. That means Mustangs still have an advantage of about 400 to 500 pounds over the new Camaro and even more compared to the larger Challenger.

We are all looking forward to thoroughly checking out the 2010 Ford Mustang.

Cologne builds Fiestas for American customer trial
by d-fens on 24-02-09 22:50

Cologne, Germany, February 20, 2009 – Ford of Europe's Cologne assembly plant in Germany is playing a key role in an initiative to introduce the New Fiesta to consumers in North America, in advance of Ford's exciting new small car which goes on sale there next year.

As part of an extensive pre-launch awareness campaign, a specially-selected group of consumers from across the USA will have the chance to sample for themselves the outstanding performance and ownership experience of the award-winning Fiesta.

Under its “Fiesta Movement” programme (www.fiestamovement.com), Ford will select 100 customers to drive the new Fiesta and then relate their experiences through social networking sites such as Facebook, FlickR and YouTube.

The 100 five-door Fiestas involved in the programme have been built at the Cologne plant, alongside European versions of the car. The “Fiesta Movement” cars feature the acclaimed 1.6-litre Ti-VCT petrol engine (88kW/120PS).

The new Fiesta has been in production in Cologne since August 2008.

When new Fiesta goes on sale in North America in 2010, the cars will be built at the Cuautitlán plant in Mexico.

The “Fiesta Movement” initiative will give Ford the opportunity to learn more about consumer requirements in the expanding small car segment in North America.

“It’s one thing to talk about the vehicle, but it’s another to put people into it and let them experience it,” said Connie Fontaine, brand content and alliances manager, Ford Motor Company. “This is a way to give people an early hands-on opportunity to get excited about the Fiesta while providing valuable feedback to our engineering team.”

North American 'Agents'

Beginning in late spring, the chosen consumers, or “agents,” will be asked to complete “missions” in their Fiesta on a monthly basis and capture their experiences digitally and share them with Ford and other consumers. The missions take them to new places, to meet new people and to experience new things in their Fiesta Agents will be encouraged to take their friends along for the ride to share the experience and pass their comments on to Ford.

Unlike any other pre-launch programme, this one is uniquely focused on using social networking media to connect consumers in the Fiesta discussion.

“It embraces the way people communicate now, and gives them the opportunity to talk to each other about Fiesta instead of a one-way dialogue from us,” said Fontaine.

Along with the agents sharing their vehicles with their network on a day-to-day basis, consumers across the country will also get hands-on experience of the Fiesta. Test drives –the goal being 100,000 in all – will give consumers the opportunity to drive the model in advance of the US launch.

Outstanding Performance, Design and Value

In Europe, the Fiesta name has long been synonymous with outstanding performance, design and value. The New Fiesta takes that three-decade heritage to a new level with eye-catching styling and exemplary driving dynamics.

Since it was introduced last August, sales of the new Fiesta have totaled more than 89,000 units across the main European markets. That success continued into 2009, with January sales of more than 28,000 vehicles.

The model is continuing to win awards, as well as orders. In Britain it was recently named Car of the Year 2009 by the authoritative What Car? magazine. In Germany, readers of Guter Rat (Good Advice) and SUPERillu presented the Fiesta ECOnetic with their renowned Auto der Vernunft 2009 trophy for value for money, economy and sustainability.

The Fiesta ECOnetic is the latest addition to the Fiesta range in Europe. Powered by a specially-calibrated version of the 90 PS 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine, combined with coated Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF), it is Ford’s most economical Fiesta and can travel 100 kilometres using just 3.7 litres of fuel*, on the EC Combined Cycle. That impressive fuel economy is matched with class-leading CO2 output of only 98 grams per kilometre.

Adding further to Fiesta's appeal, it recently received the Allergy-Tested Interior seal of approval from Germany standards organisation, TÜV Rhineland Group.

The new Fiesta is Ford Motor Company's first truly global car. By 2010 it will be produced at plants in Germany, Spain, Mexico, Thailand and China for sale in markets around the world.

Ford iosis MAC concept revealed at Geneva Motors Show
Thursday, March 5, 2009, 11:23 PM

by d-fens on 04-03-09 23:53

Geneva, Tuesday, 03 March, 2009 – Ford today unveiled a head-turning concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, to express the design direction for its next generation of global C-cars.

The iosis MAX features striking exterior and interior treatment based on a fresh interpretation of Ford’s kinetic design form language. It is a dynamic Multi Activity Vehicle (MAV) and showcases new levels of efficiency and flexibility.

Styled by a team led by Martin Smith, Ford of Europe's executive design director, the car’s dramatic looks and striking pearlescent 'Limelight' colour are complemented by innovative solutions which enhance its practicality and environmental performance.

iosis MAX showcases new door opening concepts, lightweight materials, advanced aerodynamics, and a preview of the European development of Ford's global EcoBoost petrol engine technology coming in 2010.

Coupled to this clean and lean engine are the recently introduced and acclaimed Ford PowerShift transmission, plus a new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system also due for production in 2010.

“The iosis MAX marks the next stage in the evolution of kinetic design, and showcases a number of affordable engine technologies that will make a difference to the environment and our customers’ pockets,” says Martin Smith, Ford of Europe’s Executive Design Director.

“Our designers have stretched themselves beyond the two previous iosis concepts, and have applied kinetic design form language to a MAV,” adds Smith. “The iosis MAX proves that cars in the compact MAV class can have emotive, dynamic styling without sacrificing their traditional virtues of practicality or efficiency – something that the larger and revolutionary S-MAX has already demonstrated.”

“Although the iosis MAX isn’t a forerunner to a specific production vehicle, it clearly highlights how kinetic design is evolving and can be applied with stunning results to all vehicles in the Ford portfolio.”

Exciting, dynamic design

The design team sought to create a strong impression of lightness and efficiency. This was achieved through the concept’s sleek, coupé-like side profile, which provides a clear contrast to the more boxy approach adopted by many vehicles in the compact MAV segment.

The feeling of lightness is reinforced by the extensive use of glass in the vehicle, with the steeply raked front screen flowing back in one piece to the tailgate, revealing the skeletal roof structure underneath.

The front of the iosis MAX is dominated by the bold trapezoidal lower grille, which is now a key part of the Ford brand identity. For the first time, however, the grille features a distinctive new treatment with three horizontal chrome-rimmed bars, giving the vehicle’s face a more dynamic and imposing feel.

The C-pillars, with their highly original ‘flying buttress’ design, also deliver significant functional benefits. The pillars act as spoilers, channelling airflow as close as possible to the tailgate glass for optimum aerodynamic efficiency.

The pillars work in combination with the dramatic looking aerodynamic spoiler which is centrally mounted at the rear of the roof structure, with its wings cantilevered above the tailgate glass.

Imaginative details catch the eye all around the vehicle, including the striking new graphics for the front and rear lamps, stylish LED lighting strips in the rocker panels, and stunning 19-inch alloy wheels with a lightweight two-piece construction.

Dramatic interior environment

The iosis MAX interior presents a bold evolution of the kinetic design language used on the exterior, incorporating dynamic shapes and advanced materials to create an interior environment which is light, spacious and expressive.

A key part of the iosis MAX interior concept is the spine-like bridge which runs the full length of the interior from the bulkhead through to the rear load area.

The bridge supports the centre console, and provides a mounting point for the four individual seats and central armrests. The seats are cantilevered from the bridge, allowing for an uninterrupted floor space and giving occupants the sensation that they are ‘floating on air’.

The colours selected for the interior were chosen to complement the striking ‘Limelight' of the exterior. Different tones of luminous natural greys feature on most interior surfaces. Small details are picked out in a bright acidic yellow to add visual impact and stress the dynamic, sculptural character of the shapes and graphics.

The innovative use of shapes and materials is also reflected in the centre console, which has a smooth plexiglass surface that rolls down from the instrument panel like a ribbon and flows through to the rear of the passenger compartment.

The whole of the console surface acts as a touch-screen display to control the vehicle’s systems. Information – such as sat-nav instructions or details of an incoming phone call – is displayed on the console when required using projectors mounted beneath the surface.

A rotary control at the bottom of the console allows the driver to switch between primary functions, while a mouse-like controller in front of the central armrest provides a swift and accurate way to navigate within menus as an alternative to using the touch screens.

The iosis MAX also explores innovative solutions which could provide future MAVs with increased practicality and flexibility.

To help overcome common problems faced by owners when loading or unloading the vehicle in a confined space, such as a congested multi-storey car park, the concept features a unique two piece tailgate design. This allows the tailgate to be fully opened, even when there is restricted space behind or above the vehicle.

To provide even greater loading flexibility the iosis MAX utilises a B-pillarless construction, providing a wide, unobstructed load aperture when both front and rear side doors are open. In combination with the ‘floating’ seat design, this enables awkward, bulky items – such as flat pack furniture – to be slid easily onto the floor of the cabin or the folded seat backs

New opening kinematics are also utilised in the dual-function hood design, which incorporates an active hood system for improved pedestrian protection in combination with greatly enhanced access to the engine compartment.

Responsive yet environmentally friendly

The innovation featured in the iosis MAX extends to its powertrain, which showcases efficient technologies coming in future Ford vehicles to demonstrate how reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be achieved without compromising dynamic performance.

Power is provided by a 1.6-litre 180PS four-cylinder petrol engine from Ford’s new EcoBoost engine family. Ford EcoBoost engines feature turbocharging and direct injection technology to deliver fuel economy up to 20 per cent better than conventional petrol engines with a similar power output.

EcoBoost engines will be progressively introduced to Ford’s European product range from early 2010.

The 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit in the iosis MAX is further optimised through the use of a new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, intelligent alternator and six-speed Ford PowerShift double-clutch automated manual gearbox with ratios tailored to deliver maximum fuel efficiency. Simulations predict that the concept vehicle could achieve CO2 emissions
of 125g/km.

"We're eager to hear reaction to the iosis MAX as the design team has worked hard to incorporate so many interesting ideas, features and materials that could find their way into future Ford vehicles," says John Fleming, Ford of Europe's Chairman and CEO. "The car also signals the arrival of an exciting new range of environmentally friendly Ford EcoBoost petrol engines which use the same efficient principles already making an impact on our larger North American models.

"The next 18 months will see some exciting new models with clean and affordable technologies arriving in the Ford of Europe range," Fleming adds. "When we say 'Feel the Difference', our European customers will know we mean it!"

Ford's Iosis Max concept showcases a new fuel-efficient engine.

GENEVA -- Ford's Iosis Max concept car previews the next stage of the carmaker's design language, which will appear on the new Focus due in 2010.

Ford executives said the concept doesn't preview a specific production model but offers a glimpse into the design direction and efficient powertrain technologies that are being adopted for the next generation of its global medium car range.

John Fleming, Ford of Europe CEO, said the concept "marks another important step in the renaissance of Ford of Europe's product design."

Ford has used kinetic design on its new Mondeo, Kuga, Fiesta and Ka models. The carmaker says the styling conveys "energy in motion" through its athletic stance and muscular surfacing.

Martin Smith, Ford of Europe's head of design, said the second stage of kinetic design would be more crisp and chiseled than the current look.

A bold trapezoidal lower grille, which is now a key part of the Ford of Europe's brand identity, dominates the front of the concept. For the first time, the grille has three horizontal chrome-rimmed bars, which, Ford says, gives the car's face a more dynamic and imposing feel.

The concept has a 180hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection powerplant from Ford's new EcoBoost engine family, coupled with stop-start technology.

The engine will be progressively introduced to Ford's European cars starting early 2010 and will deliver fuel economy up to 20 per cent better than conventional gasoline engines with a similar power output, Ford says.

Europe- Ford Focus RS review

Ford Focus RS review
by Mat Watson

Noise, power, speed - the RS has it allThe Ford Focus RS is one of the most eagerly anticipate cars of 2009. Read our review to see just how good it is
Right then, here’s your starter for 10. What happens when you put a 305hp engine in a front wheel drive car? Horrendous torque steer I hear you cry. Well, no actually – the new Focus RS proves this isn’t necessarily the case.

Ever since Ford revealed performance stats for the car there has been much debate as to whether it would be totally undriveable. Now, after lengthy and totally selfless research involving some amazing Cote d’Azur roads, a full tank of fuel and a complete disregard for the wellbeing of my passenger, I can report this is not the case.

Okay, so when you really gun RS it’s steering wheel does squirm a little in your hands. But as a Ford press officer helpfully explained, this is not torque steer, which is bad, but torque reaction.

And, apparently, “this is an enjoyable part of the front wheel drive experience.” I don’t know about that. However, I do know the Focus RS is very easy and hugely fun to drive.

This is partly due to the new front suspension design, which somehow almost eradicates the aforementioned torque steer. Super sharp steering, which is 10 per cent quicker than on the ST, helps too. So does the limited slip differential which maximize grip as does the fact the anti roll bars have the same levels of stiffness as those on the 2006 WRC Focus.

However, it’s that brilliant engine that amazes most. It’s the same 2.5-litre turbo unit as in the ST, which remember originally came from a Volvo. Here though it has a larger turbo, new pistons and a whole heap of other stuff, which I can’t actually remember right now.

That doesn’t matter though. What does is how the engine delivers its power. Maximum torque of 440Nm comes in at 2,500 rpm and stays til 5,500rpm. This means you can go like a rocket by short shifting gears.

But if you’re the kind of person who likes to hold on to ratios for a heady readline rush, no worries, the RS’s engine is just as happy to do this too, spinning feverishly all the way to 7,000rpm.

In short, the engine is brilliant. And it sounds brilliant too. In fact I found out it actually emits three separate distinct noises. There’s a guttural roar from the exhaust under acceleration; lifting off means air exiting the turbo’s wastegate makes a noise like a sighing horse. And finally, as you decelerate, there’s a faint whistle, which I’m told, is the turbo impeller slowing and not because the airbox is probably coming loose as I suggested.

While everything may seem rosy, there are a couple of things going against the RS. The first is the looks. Basically they won’t be to everybody’s taste. I love the car’s aggressive styling. But then again, I also like wearing tracksuit tops.

But it’s the price which is the main problem. The Focus RS costs £24,995. That’s hell of a lot. I appreciate this is the most powerful front-wheel-drive car ever. I don’t deny that 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and 163mph top speed is pretty damn impressive.

And I also accept that fact in terms of horsepower per pound sterling the RS sounds good value on paper. However, 25 grand for a Focus? I don’t know if I could. But that doesn’t matter because this is only a question you – the car buying public – can answer.

Local TV reports Ford Kuga to be made in Louisville

When Ford began laying out its plan to build European product over here, Ford's Louisville assembly plant was tipped to build the Euro Focus. But according to sources who spoke to Louisville's NBC affiliate Wave3, the plant will actually be getting the Ford Kuga. It's a coup for the plant's roughly 3,000 employees, who currently build the slow-selling Explorer and its siblings, to now have an undeniably anticipated vehicle to look forward to.

Ford and city and state authorities have been negotiating the fate of the two plants for a while. The truck plant was reportedlysafe, but the assembly plant's future was uncertain. Ford has said it will spend over $100 million to retool both of its Louisville plants - it also has a truck plant there that makes Super Duty F-Series vehicles - which will save 6,000 jobs. The conversion is expected to take six months and probably won't be ready until 2011. A Ford spokeswoman had no comment on reports about the Kuga. Hat tip to Juan

Officially Official: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO!

by John Neff on Feb 11th 2009 at 12:01AM

The SHO must go on. SHO me the money. It's SHO time!

We've heard them all during the months of speculation leading up to this moment. Without further ado, we present to you the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO. That's right, Ford has decided to revive the moniker once affixed to the sports sedan that wowed the automotive world way back in 1989. The original SHO survived three generations of Taurus models, was sold for 10 years straight and attracted over 100,000 buyers. But just as the Taurus itself devolved from America's best-selling car to a rental fleet afterthought, the original SHO ended production in 1999 having gone from a budget sports sedan to an overpriced, underpowered executive whip.

Ford is working on rehabilitating the Taurus name with a significant redesign that debuted last month at the Detroit Auto Show. Using that sedan as its canvas, the new SHO may also restore respect to a name that has fallen too far. A 365-hp twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, all-wheel-drive and plenty of upgrades is a good place to start. Follow the jump to learn everything there is to know about the return of the SHO.

Ford is currently in the process of stuffing its new 3.5L EcoBoost V6 into any that fits. The Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and upcoming Lincoln MKT are all getting it. Being based on the same platform as the MKS, it was a no-brainer that the redesigned 2010 Taurus would also get the twin-turbo, direct-inject engine that Ford promises will deliver V8 power with V6 fuel economy. Rather than simply affix the EcoBoost badge to the Taurus' trunk and call it a day, Ford product planners decided that this model would be the perfect vehicle to once again wear the letters S-H-O.

That model designation originally meant Super High Output, which definitely applies to the modern version. Whereas the original SHO used a high-revving 220-hp 3.0L V6 (later a 235-hp 3.4L V8) developed and built by Yamaha, the new SHO's advanced engine turns a relatively small 3.5 liters of displacement displacement and a lot of pressure into 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft.-lb of torque at 3,500 rpm. That makes this version of Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost V6 the most powerful one available with 10 more horsepower than its other applications.

Unlike the original SHO, however, this new one is about much more than just the engine. Backing up the potent powerplant is a torque-sensing all-wheel-drive system mated to Ford's 6F55 six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The tranny is augmented by a manual mode that can be controlled either by the console shifter or paddle shifters, and will also rev match downshifts and hold gears even when the tach is bouncing off the engine's redline.

The SHO further separates itself from lesser Taurus models with a beefed up suspension that includes SHO-specific shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars and strut mount bushings. Furthermore, the new SHO also features Ford's new SR1 suspension setup with MacPherson front struts and a multi-link set up in the rear. We'll have to wait for a test drive to determine for sure, but the SHO's suspension should be noticeably sharper than that of the standard Taurus and its other platform-mate, the Lincoln MKS. There will even be an optional Performance Package that includes better brake pads, recalibrated steering, a "Sport Mode" for the stability control system and shorter 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio. Nineteen-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle rubber will be standard, while 20-inchers wearing Michelin high-performance summer tires will also be available.

New wheels are one of only a few items that will visually set the SHO apart from lesser Taurus trim levels. The grille features a dark grey finish that matches the wheels and new parking lamp bevels are SHO-only items. There's also a decklid spoiler out back along with a simple SHO/EcoBoost badge on the trunk lid. One of the exclusive colors available will also be Atlantis Green, which Ford says was inspired by the Deep Emerald Green seen on many second-generation (1992-1995) SHO models.

While the exterior styling adheres to the same sleeper philosophy as the original, the new SHO interior is a bit more outgoing. The seats are leather-trimmed and two-tone with Mike Suede inserts, which Ford proudly points out are produced from post-consumer yarns made of plastic soda bottles. The dash and door panels also feature acres of aluminum trim, and SHO branding appears on the floor mats and passenger-side dash panel.

Those are basically the lengths to which Ford has gone to transform its new Taurus into a modern day interpretation of the original SHO. There is some bad news, however, some of which will likely not go over well with the SHO faithful who live on websites like SHOtimes.com, SHOforum.com and BringBackTheSHO.com, and who Ford also claims it listened to during the car's development.

For one, the original Yamaha 3.0L V6 was one of the most gorgeous engines ever created with an overlapping system of intake runners that is a marvel to behold. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 in the new version (upper right) is covered by a boring, black plastic shroud with SHO branding. Also, aside from the aforementioned availability of a SHO-inspired shade of green, there's not much that visually connects the new car to the original. Though the first- and second-gen SHOs did not look drastically different than a standard Taurus, there were certain SHO elements that have become associated with the car, specifically the "slicer" wheels that debuted in '90/'91 and were standard on all second-gen models.

Then there's the question of whether another Ford product might have been a more appropriate choice for a modern day SHO. The Fusion, for instance, is smaller, lighter and less expensive than the current Taurus. While the redesigned 2010 Fusion does offer a Sport model with a big V6, we envision a more balanced Fusion SHO that honors the original with front-wheel-drive, a manual transmission and high output 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder. It might be nice, but it's not the way Ford went.

The 2010 Ford Taurus SHO will start at $37,995 when it goes on sale this summer. That's a lofty price tag for a Taurus, but not for a 365-hp, all-wheel-drive sedan stuffed with this much tech and luxury. The original SHO stickered for just under $20,000 in late 1988, which was also considered a big premium to pay for Ford's bread-and-butter family sedan. But auto pundits of the day quickly realized that the SHO was a performance bargain compared to more expensive cars from brands like BMW. Based on what we've learned so far, the same thing will likely be said of the new one.

Harley-Davidson F-150 Shows 6.2-liter V-8 Instead of Official 5.4-liter V-8

We were a bit disappointed last week when Ford revealed the new 2010 Harley-Davidson edition F-150 factory street truck. It wasn't the looks that let us down but rather its mild powertrain -- the same 320 horsepower / 390 pounds-feet of torque 5.4-liter V-8 that's available in the rest of the F-150 lineup. A truck like the Harley F-150 needs a special engine under its hood and we had expected to see the second application of Ford's 6.2-liter premium V-8 (formerly known as "Boss") sitting in the engine bay. The engine and its 400 hp and 400 pounds-feet of torque are already confirmed for the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor desert runner.

So, we were pleasantly surprised by the pictures that Drew Phillips and our friends at Autoblog took at the Chicago auto show, where the Harley F-150 made its debut. When they opened the hood staring back at them was the 6.2-liter V-8 with a helpful "6.2L BOSS" emblem stamped in the plastic cover over the engine's intake manifold.

What does this mean? Officially, Ford is still sticking with its earlier statements that the 5.4-liter V-8 is the only engine for the new Harley F-150.

"The only engine confirmed for the Harley-Davidson F-150 is the 5.4-liter V-8 it will launch with," a Ford spokesperson told us. They had no comment about the 6.2-liter V-8.

Fair enough, but we're going to call this particular show truck "Boss Hog" and keep our fingers crossed that the 6.2-liter V-8 is coming sooner rather than later

EcoBoost's best friend: Ford unveils new 6F-55 six-speed automatic

six-speed automatic
by John Neff Feb 18th, 2009 at 12:29PM

When Ford debuted its 6F transmission back in late 2005, we were told it could handle up to 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. That transmission debuted with the automaker's 3.5L V6 and both are now widely used together in a number of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products. Times have changed, however, and Ford has introduced a new version of its 3.5L V6 with twin turbochargers and direct injection. Called the 3.5L EcoBoost, this engine makes more power than the original 6F transmission, now called the 6F-50, can handle. Enter the 6F-55, a new version of the 6F-50 with beefed up internals to handle the 3.5L EcoBoost's 355-365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. One example is the new ring gear on the 6F-55, which is 41.5mm thick compared to 31.5 mm on the 6F-50.

The 6F-55 will be used initially in versions of the Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and MKT that feature the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. It will also be the only transmission available for the new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO that features the most powerful version of Ford's EcoBoost V6 (sorry SHO fans, no standard transmission will be offered). Each application will also feature SelectShift for manual operating the tranny with either the console-mounted shifter or paddle shifters on the steering wheel. We'll have to wait for our first turn behind the wheel of an EcoBoost-equipped Ford product to judge just how well the new 6F-55 handles all that extra power, but based on the rather significant list of internal changes detailed in the press release after the jump, the new tranny appears more than capable of handling our heavy left foot.

While those of us in the States have to make due with the mildly reworked 2010 Ford Ranger until its replacement arrives in 2011, the rest of the world gets to enjoy the thoroughly updated version you see here. The new Ford Ranger will bow at next month's Geneva Motor Show and once sales begin in April, owners will be able to choose from three body styles: the standard single cab, a double cab or the RAP (Rear Access Panel) variant, which features a set of rear-hinged panels aft of the front doors.

Ten colors will be available including five new hues – Copper Red, Desert Bronze, Highland Green, Lagoon Blue and Wining Blue – with power provided by either a 2.5- or 3.0-liter Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel. Either oilburner will be available in either 4x2 or 4x4 configurations and mated to a choice of a five-speed automatic or manual gearboxes, and both engines are able to tow 6,600 pounds, with the 2.5-liter unit putting out 145 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, and the 3.0-liter mill delivering 156 hp and 180 280 lb-ft of torque. The interior gets all the usual amenities, including air conditioning, power windows and a MP3-compatible stereo. Production will begin in Thailand in March and there's chance this is the best preview yet of what the U.S. will get in 2011.

In the Autoblog Garage: 2010 Ford Fusion Sport
Monday, February 16, 2009, 11:36 PM

by Chris Shunk on Feb 16th 2009 at 11:58AM

When Ford introduced the Ford Fusion back in 2005, the Blue Oval's midsize sedan was a pleasant surprise. Ford delivered vastly improved quality while also offering impressive driving dynamics, room for five adults and a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines. The Fusion put Ford back into play in the battle for midsize sedan supremacy, and in some ways the agile sedan shined brighter than the Camry and Accord. The Fusion also won respect from Consumer Reports for its high quality, and JD Powers named the Fusion an APEAL winner. For all that is right about the Fusion, though, it has consistently ranked fourth or fifth in the sales battle, losing big to the Altima, Accord, and Camry.

Ford put a lot into the first generation Fusion, and for 2010 the Dearborn, MI-based automaker is taking more big strides. The Fusion has a fresh look, more powertrain combinations, and hybrid offering that can achieve 41 mpg in the city. Ford also introduced the new 2010 Fusion Sport with a 3.5L V6 engine producing 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. We've been waiting patiently for Ford to offer its 3.5L engine in the Fusion, so we happily took the keys to a well-equipped Fusion Sport recently to test it for ourselves

Our Black Fusion Sport tester came equipped with all-wheel drive and carried a price tag of $29,590 USA including destination. Our tester had few options checked off, but it did include Ford's Moon and Tunes package that adds a moon roof and up-level Sony sound system. Our Fusion Sport tester also had a reverse sensing system that gives an audible warning whenever you're about to back over something or someone.

The original Fusion was the first Ford in North America to incorporate the brand's now familiar three-bar grille. For 2010, the Fusion is first again; this time it's the first vehicle in North America to combine Ford's North American Bold design language with some Kinetic cues from Europe. The large fog lamp openings and open-mouth lower fascia have roots in the Euro Focus and Mondeo, yet the all-American three-bar grille still hovers ever larger above. Also gone are the Fusion's "squircle" headlamps, replaced by more contemporary lamps that match up well with the grille.

The Fusion's bonnet is also all-new, with stamped metal similar to the new Taurus, yet featuring a far more aggressive appearance. Our Fusion Sport tester came equipped with body color rocker moldings, also giving it a lower appearance than other Fusions. Out back, the Fusion sports new taillamps and a shorter rear bumper with twin tailpipes peeking through. There's even a modest rear spoiler that we could honestly do without, but it helps differentiate the Sport model from other run-of-the-mill Fusions.

The Fusion's makeover leaves it looking sportier and more refined than the model it replaces, but without some sporty moves, the beauty is only skin deep. Fortunately, Ford delivered the goods. First, the Fusion Sport's exclusive 3.5L V6 is mated to Ford's tried and true 6F50 six-speed automatic transmission. The engine's 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque don't sound like a Mustang's V8, but the engine packs enough aural punch to let passengers and onlookers know that this is no ordinary midsize sedan.

The ample powertrain proved to be very engaging on the straights, with enough power to keep your mind on the accelerator and lesser sedans in the rear view mirror. The Fusion's six-speed transmission is smooth and shifted fast enough on its own to win out over the Select Shift manual shifting option. With "manual" shifts occurring up to a full second after selecting a gear, it joins most other manumatic transmissions in being consistently passed over.

The V6-powered Toyota Camry proves that a proven powertrain does not make a driver's car. The Fusion, however, has always had a willing chassis and the story improves for 2010. The Fusion Sport has greatly increased spring rates at the front and rear, and a rear stabilizer bar that's increased in diameter by 4mm for the AWD model verses the base Fusion. The rear suspension was also improved by moving the pivot points for the control arms closer to the center of the car, reducing body roll in the process.

The improvements to the Fusion's already athletic chassis has made for a very stable, engaging ride, which was only enhanced by our tester's optional, class exclusive all-wheel-drive system. On dry pavement, the Fusion Sport's Haldex AWD system and P235/45R18 Goodyear Eagle tires fly in the face of physics. In other words, the Fusion Sport has some serious grip, especially for a $29,000 midsize family sedan. Our second day with the Fusion came with four inches of snow, which gave us yet another reason to recommend the all-wheel-drive system. On a day when at least 10 drivers met the business end of a ditch during our 25-mile commute, the Fusion surrendered not one iota of wheel slip.

The only downside to a powerful V6 engine coupled with an all-wheel-drive system is fuel economy. We averaged 20.1 USA mpg during our week with the Fusion Sport, which isn't going to score you any points with the Sierra Club. If this news makes you a little uneasy, fear not. The 2.5L four-cylinder Fusion achieves 34 mpg on the highway while also exhibiting even better handling due to a reduction in mass. There's also the new Fusion Hybrid that uses an improved version of the Escape Hybrid's gas-electric powertrain and achieves a rather remarkable 41 mpg in the city.

For all of the Fusion's capabilities, it will spend most of its time as a competent, comfortable family sedan. Ford engineers worked to make the 2010 model quieter than the model it replaces, while at the same time creating a more rigid frame that can soak up road imperfections without fuss. And though the Fusion may look a bit smaller than the competition, its interior is roomy and thoughtfully packaged for four adults.

The Fusion Sport features supple leather seats with ample lateral support to keep you upright in your seat when cornering forces come calling. We happened to like the eye-catching red leather inserts and dash trim that differentiates this top-shelf model, though some may find the interior color palette tacky. The seats and steering wheel also feature red stitching, which is a nice touch for a mainstream midsize sedan. Finally, Ford kept the Fusion's interior stuffed with high quality, soft-touch materials throughout.

While the 2010 Fusion earns high marks for big stuff like its chassis, engine and exterior design, there are some more minor issues that tried to spoil our fun. Some of the interior switchgear feels cheap with chrome-painted plastic that looks ill-equipped to handle the test of time. The steering wheel is also too Ford-parts-bin familiar for a top-of-the-line sport model. Those issues can be easily overlooked, but what we least appreciated about our 2010 Fusion tester was its lack of heated seats. Heated seats are available as an option, but butt-warming tech should be standard for any leather-upholstered seating surface in the dead of Michigan winter.

We liked the first-generation Fusion quite a bit, and the 2010 model is clearly far more capable. In addition to the 2.5L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 models, Ford has added both this Fusion Sport and the Fusion Hybrid to its lineup, which gives customers a choice of Fusion for any disposition. With four Fusions from which to choose, it will be easier than ever to pick the one that's right for you. The Fusion Sport earned our affection for sure, but we'll soon be spending time behind the wheel of the 240-hp 3.0L V6 model, the 34-USA mpg 2.5L four-cylinder model and the 41- usa mpg hybrid before deciding which Fusion fits us just right. Choice, however, is a very good thing, especially when it comes to great product.
